Savannah, Georgia: mossy trees, fishy pizza, and a million lights

Today we left the rain in Atlanta behind, trading it for sunny skies a few hours east, in Savannah. One of the final stops of our trip!

We arrived in Savannah shortly after noon, electing to make Forsyth Park the first stop on our speed tour of the city. We walked around for a bit, admiring the varied architectural styles of the historic mansions bordering the park, and the Spanish moss hanging from trees.

Forsyth Park.

The park was just a short walk from St. John the Baptist Cathedral, so we headed there next. The ridiculously elaborate construction and adornment of cathedrals never fails to impress, and this one was no exception. We took a bunch of photos (Lori has several in her gallery), though they really don’t capture the scale of standing in the enormous, ornate nave.

From there, we took a drive over to the Wormsloe Historic Site, arriving shortly before closing time. No worries, since we weren’t really interested in a tour—we just wanted to photograph the view down Oak Avenue. If you’ve ever looked at photos of Savannah, you’ve probably seen it already:

We were hungry by this point, and it was starting to get dark, so we drove to the historic district in search of food. We ended up at a unique little eatery by the river that had some inspired menu choices and a great beer list. I ended up having ahi tuna pizza, and I don’t understand why this isn’t a thing everywhere—it’s oddly fantastic!

Next up was the Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens, to take in their holiday lights display. Tonight happened to be “family night”, which meant admission was half price for everyone—so we figured it was going to be a zoo. It actually wasn’t too crowded though, so I guess fate decided that we’d experienced our fair share of screaming children at the Georgia Aquarium yesterday (the frenzied shouts of “Dory! Dory!! Dory!!!” from a hundred high-pitched voices every time we were near a fish tank housing a blue tang still haunts me—thanks Pixar).

I’m normally not a fan of these types of holiday exhibits, but this one was especially well done. They claim that over a million lights are on display, and that’s easily believable. We spent about an hour working our way through the presentation before deciding to finally make our way over to our hotel for the night. Where the front desk attendant accusingly suggested that the photo on my driver’s license might not actually be me (edit 12/3: pic here, by popular demand!). I guess it’s time to shave.

Ha, I added a link to it in the last paragraph of this post. I think I was about 23 and in my “juvenile convict” stage for my license photo. It expires in a couple weeks, so I guess it’s time to update it with my hot new “unkempt transient” look.
