Glacier day 3: waterfalls and rain

This morning we checked out of our hotel in East Glacier Village. We didn’t feel like we were finished with Glacier National Park yet, so we booked one more night on the opposite edge of the park (for $39—thanks Hotwire!). We figured we’d drive across the park and see a few things that we’d missed on the previous couple days.

We hit the Two Medicine area of the park first, and did short hikes to two waterfalls: Appistoki and Running Eagle. Appistoki was unremarkable, other than the dozen or so mountain sheep at the falls that seemed to want us to leave. So we did—those sheep were jerks anyway.

Running Eagle Falls was nicer. The waterfall exits through a cliff face hole, which is striking to see (see below for photo). There were a bunch of American Dipper birds playing in the water and fishing nearby. I watched one catch a fish, and then proceed to repeatedly bash the poor thing against a rock until it exploded. I guess that’s how they get the meat out? I took a short video of the little guy at work:

Unfortunately it started raining (pouring, really) as we were headed to the next area, so we decided to check into our hotel early and then go out for beers. Tomorrow we’re headed south, toward Grand Teton and Yellowstone!

A couple photos from our short day (click for larger versions):
