We Do America!

The Badlands should really be called “the Goodlands”

We have been travelling for one week today. We “celebrated” by spending the day at Theodore Roosevelt National Park. The terrain in this unique place ranged from colorful Badlands to sweeping prairies full of swaying grasses and meandering rivers. As we wound our way through the park on the 36-mile-long loop road we couldn’t help but stop at every prairie dog town to listen to them squeak. The adorable part was that every squeak coincided with a little tail twitch.

The wildlife was very abundant. We spotted not only bison and prairie dogs, but black-tailed deer, a ptarmigan, some large hawks, and even a group of turkeys. The park was virtually empty, so we often felt like we were by ourselves. Fine with us!

Looks like tomorrow is going to be mostly driving as we head to Montana. Hopefully we find some amusing roadside attractions to break it all up. World’s largest grizzly bear sculpture perhaps?

Next major stop is Glacier National Park. We will likely spend several days there…or longer! I’m so grateful to have the opportunity and option to stay as long or as short as we’d like to do what we want to do.

I’m falling asleep writing this post. So, since a picture is worth a thousand words, I leave you with some photos highlighting parts of the day (click to see larger versions). Thanks for stopping by!

This is a "cannonball concretion" according to the sign.

A lone buffalo on the prairie. They used the roads more often than people today!

One of the many overlooks. The river is full of run-off from the constantly eroding canyon walls.

Another absolutely gorgeous park! I love all the wildlife and the open spaces that allow you to see for miles.
